Drug & Alcohol Misuse Policy

Drug & Alcohol Policy Development and Implementation

Workplace substance misuse policies (drug and alcohol policy) are recognised as having a major impact in dealing with the problems associated with inappropriate use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace. They reduce accidents, long-term sickness and compensation claims, whilst providing complete guidelines for company employees.

Consultation with most of the major trade unions has resulted in the acceptance of welfare-based policies across many UK industries. SHLS has an experienced team of experts who are able to provide assistance in the construction, implementation, and management of a policy that is fully compliant with all statutory obligations, follows current industry best practice and meets the specific needs of our clients. SHLS has created and implemented substance misuse policies into leading Blue chip companies for many years, this extensive level of experience has lead SHLS to becoming and sustaining our position as innovative, market leaders in the field of substance misuse policies.

Once the policy has been formulated, the SHLS team can provide ongoing help and advice on the implementation of the policy, including extensive training on drug awareness and sample collection protocols provided by our Learning and Development Team.

Our extensive consultation with most of the major trade unions over the years has resulted in the acceptance of welfare-based policies across many UK industries. As a result, a tried and tested 6 step process has been developed.

STEP 1 : Assess the risk to the business of drugs and alcohol misuse and evaluate current company resources, culture and attitudes.

STEP 2 : Consult, develop and publicise a corporate policy, including the distribution of employee pamphlets and awareness posters.

STEP 3 : Develop a programme of awareness and training for all employees and encourage those with problems to seek help.

STEP 4 : Develop procedures for testing to suit the clients needs.

STEP 5 : Implement policy and provide management training.

STEP 6 : Monitor policy and procedures on an ongoing basis using Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), and produce regular management statistics.
